The Cardigan

The Beginnings of the Cardigan

The origin of the cardigan sweater dates as far back as the mid 1800's during the Crimean War. James Thomas Brudenell, who was the 7th Earl of Cardigan, was a British military commander who often wore this button-up garment.

Once fashioned with coarser materials like wool, this one-piece sweater generally has buttons or other fastening pieces in the front. While most cardigans utilize buttons, some have zippers that can help to secure a snug fit.
With a cardigan, you can create a new look for any clothing ensemble without having to change what you're already wearing. And, if Mr. Rogers feels that it's okay to wear cardigans, we should certainly take note.
